Once upon a time, there lived a boy and a girl.
Boy was madly and hopelessly in love with Girl. It was a requited love, but for some reason, he had a knack for irking her so easily. And she was hot-tempered.
On a fateful Sunday like this, Boy took Girl out for an outdoor date.
Oh, fun they had.
Then, out of nowhere, he said something real stupid.
Girl got mad. Really mad.
“Why do you always do this? How could you say such hurtful thing to me?”
“I’m so sorry my love, I didn’t mean it that way”. Boy pleaded.
Girl was done with the date.
“That’s it! I don’t care what you meant to say or not, I’m done”.
“My love, I can explain, please hear me out”.
“I don’t want to hear it, just take me back home now!” She yelled.
“Baby girl, please it’s not what you think, just give me a minute to explain”.
“No, I want to go home. Take me home now!”
“All right love, I promise, I’ll take you home but please just look at me”.
When she didn’t respond, he tried harder.
“Baby please j j… just look at me, please”.
“What for?” She hissed.
“I’m not going to entertain any apologies or stupid explanations from you today. It’s either you take me back home or I’ll order myself a ride”.
This is getting out of control, Boy thought. I have to do something fast.
He cleared his throat.
“Okay then, you can have the car key, I’ll hail a cab”.
Girl was shocked. This surely was not what she expected him to say. Even though she said she didn’t want any explanation, she’d expected him to pull her into an embrace and tickle her all over until she was out of breath like he usually does. She loved how passionate their kiss got after such fights, which in all fairness, she always exaggerated just for the thrills.
Masking her shock and anger, she slowly turned around only to be met by a bigger shock.
Boy was holding out a ring. He was proposing to her. She wanted to jump into his arms and kiss his brains out but instead, she swallowed stubbornly and said,
“That does not look like your car key”.
“No, this is me asking to take you home, for real. I’m want to keep getting under your skin for the rest of our lives”.
“Boy, that’s such a cheesy proposal! Is that all you’ve got?” She was fighting, and failing to hold back the joy she felt.
“Well, I had a two-page speech rehearsed but you threw me off. That’s all I could come up with. So, are you gonna marry me or nah?”
“If I don’t, ain’t nobody else gonna marry your pathetic ass, Boy. Now, put the damn ring on my finger already!”
“You’re crazy, but I love you so so much”.
“You do? Hmmm… I wonder if the size of this tiny diamond is directly proportional to that of your acclaimed love for me”, she teased.
“Girl, don’t you mess with me! I just gave you an engagement ring that cost me three months’ salary!”
She was about to retort with a clap-back but stopped as the reality of the moment set it.
She just got engaged to the love of her life. The only boy she’d ever been with. They’ve been together since high school and she’s had all her firsts with him. She had always thought she wanted a lavish engagement, one so colourful and elaborate that would be carried by the all the gossip blogs and make her friends green with envy.
But right there in that moment, she realized that she wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Simple and absolutely not glamorous. She knew she’d cherish that moment forever.
So she smiled, hugged him tightly and,
“I love you too, silly!”
